In the 1790 census his residence was listed as North Susquehanna Hundred in Cecil Co., Md. Several other members of this Gatchell family married into the Brown family. In 1864 Gilbert Cope wrote their family history in a book, or booklet: Browns of Nottingham, containing 18 pages through the 6th. generation, plus 6 introductory pages and a complete Index. Jeremiah Gatchell was disowned by the Friends Monthly Meeting in July 1767: ". . . for not attending Meeting; for frolicking and dancing at his dwelling." A photostatic copy of Jeremiah's estate's final accounting, lists his widow Margaret and 11 children (2 of them had died by then), on Dec. 14, 1803.

She was a midwife. She died at Marblehead on 11 October 1684. Brother of SAMUEL GATCHELL {1635, Marblehead}. (There is no explicit statement that they were brothers, but as they were of about the same age, and received a joint grant of land in 1638, this is a reasonable assumption.) (Pope includes an entry for a "Richard Gatchell," said to have been taxed at Marblehead in 1637. No such person exists in the pertinent tax list; Pope probably let his eyes drift from one line to another in reading this tax list.) Banks gives the origin of this immigrant and his brother as West Monkton, Somersetshire, citing "Genealogy" as his source [Topo Dict 143]. The Bishops' Transcripts for this parish exist for the years 1599, 1605, 1607, 1618, 1623, 1625, 1629, 1630, 1636 and 1639, but do not contain any entries for this family. Given the port of embarkation, the two brothers likely did come from some parish in Somerset, Dorset or Devon. The given name of the head of family in the passenger list is not legible. The entry states that "[blank] Gachill" was accompanied by a wife and family, but neither John Gatchell nor Samuel Gatchell seems to have been married in 1635. If "[blank] Gachill" and his wife were the parents of these two brothers, then they must have chosen not to make the trip, or else died on the voyage or soon after. The first record for any of the family members is the appearance of both brothers in a Marblehead tax list on 1 January 1637/8 followed by a joint grant of land later in the same year.
