Not much is know about the Knowlton ancestors. It is know that Dale Knowlton was adopted into the Knowlton family. His mother died during childbirth, and his father, a man by the last name of Dippert, died of spinal menigitis two months before Dale's birthday. The Dipperts had four or five children, each of whom was adopted by a separate family.
