The Kaup family can date itself back to 1722 A.D., the birth year of Theodorius Kaup, born in Brenken, Westphalia.
The Kaup name, according to one genealogical source, possibly originated from the Kauppa region, an area near the Fulda river. Another source states that the name means "one from a hilly place".
There is also the possibility that the Kaup ancestors took their name from their home town. There are several towns in Germany that incorporate "Kaup" into their name. There is actually a town by the name of Kauppa, though it is in eastern Germany. The town of Kauppen is located a little to the south of where our ancestors came, which would make it a possible original home town.
